T.O.G.K.A. Senegal - Sensei Gavin Hall, 4th Dan
(Photos below)
Born in Sheffield 1962, Gavin started his karate training in 1979 with Sensei Steve Legdon at the Manor Top Dojo and then at Greystones Karaté club.
His first meeting with Sensei Ravey was in 1980 when Sensei was on one of his visits from Japan!
After several years of training with Sensei Legdon and Sensei Ken Allen at the Chesterfield dojo he was graded to Shodan by Sensei Ravey in 1986. Gavin graded to Nidan at the end of 1989 before leaving England to settle in South West France.
During his time in England Gavin was Karate Instructor at Sheffield Poly where he taught, amongst others, several karateka who are still on the karate scene around Sheffield (Mick Warrington, Steve Shaw and Andy Barker). This was also a period where he trained regularly with Sensei Harry Cook (Seijinkai Karate do Association), Sensei Georges Andrews (IOGKF), Sensei Nigel Adams, and also with Sensei Eric Mather, who practiced Shotokan and always enjoyed an exchange of techniques from both styles! He also attended occasional courses with Sensei Morio Higoanna on his visits to England.
When Gavin settled in France he opened three different clubs around the Bordeaux region where he taught and trained regularly for 20 years until January 2010.
He made occasional visits to England to train with his old mates around the different clubs, and with Sensei Ravey on his rare visits from Australia. Regular meetings with Sensei James Rousseau and other teachers in the French Karate Association gave him the chance to carry on his training as well as teaching and grading.
Gavin was graded to Sandan in 1995 with the French Karate Association.
Over the years the contact with Sensei Ravey has always been maintained their last meeting in November 2009.
Gavin was graded to Yondan by Sensei Ravey just before another departure!
In January 2010 Gavin, along with his wife, departed for Senegal on the West coast of Africa. Since arriving contact has been made with local clubs and Gavin has started to introduce Goju-Ryu into a federation where there are mainly Shotokan clubs.
